HBO is apparently working on not one but two Game of Thrones prequels. According to The Hollywood Reporter and other Hollywood sites, HBO is in “early development” on a new prequel series with a fantastic name.
The new show is called Tales of Dunk and Egg, and it’s based on George R.R. Martin’s novellas about Ser Ducan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg).
The stories are set about 90 years before A Song of Ice and Fire, which itself became Game of Thrones for HBO.
There is no word yet on who is writing the show or which actors may appear in it. However, Variety reported that the program is a “high priority” for HBO right now as it looks to keep the Game of Thrones mill running.
Tales of Dunk and Egg is the second Game of Thrones prequel series that HBO is developing. The first is called House of the Dragon, and it stars Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, Peaky Blinders) as King Viserys Tagaryen.
After the hugely successful Game of Thrones ended its eight-season run in 2019, the network announced plans to explore multiple spin-offs.
Before House of the Dragon and Tales of Dunk and Egg, another Game of Thrones spin-off reached pilot stage, with Kingsman writer Jane Goldman acting as showrunner and Naomi Watts cast in the lead role. However it wasn’t to be–in October it was announced that although the pilot had been shot, HBO wouldn’t be moving forward with the series.
Like that show, there is no guarantee that Tales of Dunk and Egg will advance past the idea and development stage and actually get the green light for a pilot or full series.
