Unless you’ve got a ticket to the Koelnmesse in Germany for the in-person event, you’ll need to reserve yourself a seat in front of your PC or smart TV for Opening Night Live. Like in previous years, you’ll be able to watch the show on The Game Awards YouTube and Twitch channels.
What to expect from Gamescom Opening Night Live
Speaking to VGC, Keighley said that ONL 2023 will be more focused on updates for games that are scheduled to be released within the next 12 months. “It’s going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2, and Black Myth Wukong,” Keighley said. “This year’s ONL is less about announcing brand-new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year.”
Summer Game Fest had no shortage of big reveals on its Los Angeles stage earlier this year, as new trailers for Alan Wake 2, Mortal Kombat 1, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth were highlights of that show. Last year’s ONL show had several big games present, including Sonic Frontiers, Lords of the Fallen, Dune: Awakening, and on the hardware front, the reveal of Sony’s DualSense Edge controller. Looking ahead to the 2023 gaming schedule, there are still a lot of high-profile games coming.
For this year’s Opening Night Live, a number of games have already been confirmed for the show. Mortal Kombat 1 will have a new gameplay trailer, there’ll be a fresh look at Alan Wake 2, Assassin’s Creed Mirage is showing up, and there’ll even be a new look at Homeworld 3. Additionally, Delta Force will be formally revealed at Opening Night Live, Black Myth Wukong is bringing some new gameplay to the show, and ahead of its September release, there’ll be a quick dive into Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming expansion Phantom Liberty.
On the speculative side, it’s worth noting that Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon launches on August 25, while September includes heavy-hitters such as Starfield, the PS5 port of Baldur’s Gate 3, Lies of P, and Payday 3. In October, Assassin’s Creed Mirage, Detective Pikachu Returns, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder are just some of the highlights of that month, with even more to come in November, December, and in 2024.
How long is Gamescom Opening Night Live?
There’s no confirmed running time yet for this year’s ONL, but for comparison, last year’s show ran for almost two hours and had over 30 announcements.
