The fantasy drama Game of Thrones, both a popular HBO series and run of novels, will also soon become a Broadway play, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The play, which is currently being developed by author George R. R. Martin, will also debut productions in London’s West End and in Australia, with the first show expected to launch sometime in 2023.
The play, which is still untitled, is expected to “for the first time take audiences deeper behind the scenes of a landmark event that previously was shrouded in mystery.” Somewhat less shrouded in mystery already by this announcement, that landmark event is expected to be The Great Tourney at Herrenhal, a contest that took place 16 years before the events of the HBO series.
Many fans and The Hollywood Reporter additionally are speculating, based on the books, that those in attendance at The Great Tourney included a young Ned Stark, his sister Lyanna, teenage Jaime Lannister, Lord Robert Baratheon, and many others. Fans who are only familiar with the HBO version may be in for a bit of a disorienting surprise, as Martin’s timeline varies from the TV version–so many characters may be in play, or at a surprising age, than they may remember.
“The seeds of war are often planted in times of peace,” Martin said in a statement. “Few in Westeros knew the carnage to come when highborn and smallfolk alike gathered at Harrenhal to watch the finest knights of the realm compete in a great tourney, during the Year of the False Spring. It is a tourney oft referred during HBO’s Game of Thrones, and in my novels, A Song of Ice & Fire… and now, at last, we can tell the whole story… on the stage.”
Speaking of telling the whole story–HBO is currently developing three Game of Thrones prequel spinoffs.
