GTA 6 Trailer Debuts Early After Leak, Confirming 2025 Release And Vice City Setting

After years of rumor and speculation, the first trailer for Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto VI has debuted. The trailer initially leaked less than a day before its planned debut, which prompted Rockstar to release it early. As rumored, GTA VI will take players to Vice City–and the broader state of Leonida–and is scheduled to launch in 2025 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar Games previously confirmed it was developing the next GTA game, but this is the first time we’re getting any level of detail on what to expect. Based on the trailer, it appears the rumors were also correct that GTA VI will feature two protagonists–a man and a woman. The female character appears to be an ex-con, and we see what looks like some form of in-game social media, as we see a lot of what TikTok- and Instagram Reel-style videos. There’s a Florida Man joke, too, and we see the Leonida wetlands in addition to Vice City, Rockstar’s take on Miami.

Now Playing: GTA 6 (Grand Theft Auto VI) Official Trailer

Other details include an airboat, an alligator being pulled out a backyard pool (and, later, one entering a store), police bodycam footage, the return of Weazel News, dirt bikes and quads, an apparent convenience story robbery, and lots of neon. You can check out some screenshots from the trailer above.

“Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences,” said Rockstar founder Sam Houser in a press release. “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”

The press release confirms the game is set in Leonida, Rockstar’s version of Florida, where players will visit “the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond.”

All of this is more mood-setting than particularly revealing about how this game will be a step up from Grand Theft Auto V, which first released in 2013, other than confirming the name, setting, and release date window. There’s also no mention of what to expect from GTA Online–it’s an open question of whether Rockstar releases a new standalone mode, continues to evolve the existing game, or something else. The press release calls GTA VI the “biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.”

As noted above, the game has been confirmed for a 2025 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The press release makes no mention of a PC version; it’s possible that will come later, as was the case with GTA V.

The trailer was initially leaked by an account on Twitter/X. As was to be expected, the account was suspended in less than an hour. Rockstar subsequently stated on Twitter, “Our trailer has leaked so please watch the real thing on YouTube.” A senior gameplay designer at Rockstar, Javier Altman, said in a tweet, “I was hoping to watch this for the first time tomorrow along with my fellow teammates and coworkers. I feel we deserved that moment.”
