The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst was a 2015 HBO documentary miniseries about New York real estate heir Robert Durst, a convicted murderer. It was written by Andrew Jarecki, Marc Smerling, and Zac Stuart-Pontier, with Jarecki directing the series. Almost a decade later, HBO has announced it is bringing the docuseries back again for 2024.
During the production of the first installment of The Jinx, Durst sat with Jarecki for more than 20 hours, over several years, despite having never previously cooperated with any journalist. Meanwhile, as The Jinx was airing, the show gained widespread exposure when Durst was arrested on first-degree murder charges for the death of his friend, Susan Berman, the day before its finale aired as he uttered the words “Killed them all, of course.”
Just hours earlier, based on evidence uncovered by the filmmakers, Durst had been arrested in a hotel lobby in New Orleans. The filmmakers continued their investigation for the next eight years, uncovering hidden material and Durst’s prison calls. There will also be interviews with people who have never before come forward. Jarecki and Start-Pontier are returning as director and executive producer, respectively.
The show was able to unravel one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in New York history, exposing long-buried information discovered during the filmmakers’ decades-long investigation of Durst. After airing in 2015, The Jinx was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, winning for Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series and Outstanding Picture Editing For Nonfiction Programming.
