New details have emerged regarding some reported behind-the-scenes details about the next Borderlands game and a sequel to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands.
Kotaku reported that after Gearbox’s parent company Embracer announced budget concerns in 2023, Gearbox “shelved some work on exciting new projects and IPs.” The developer is said to have shifted focus at this point to the next Borderlands game and a sequel to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The Borderlands 3 sequel “underwent a reshuffling” of its leadership team, the report said, adding that the rumored Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands sequel had a “soft reboot.”

Sources told the site that both games are “still very promising and progressing well.” At the same time, the site’s sources said the uncertainty around Embracer and Gearbox’s potential sale to a different company created some level of uneasiness among developers.
The existence of Borderlands 4 and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 first came to light in 2023 thanks to a developer’s LinkedIn profile. Earlier this month, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford said the studio’s next game would be the “greatest” title the studio has ever made, and many people believe it’s Borderlands 4.
In 2023, Embracer warned that layoffs, studio closures, and game cancellations were coming after a massive funding deal fell through at the 11th hour, moves that have since occurred. It has since come to light that this deal was reportedly with Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games, which previously gave Embracer $1 billion.
Just recently, it was reported that Embracer is getting paid $500 million to sell Saber Interactive, while a deal to sell Gearbox may be near. It’s been rumored since September 2023 that Embracer might sell Gearbox.
Earlier in February, Embracer alluded to potential studio sales, informing investors that, at the time, it still had a “few larger structured divestment processes” in the works that could be monetarily beneficial and reduce capital expenditure for the company.
