How to get animal mounts in Hogwarts Legacy

Hippogriff mount

To obtain animal mounts in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need to progress further until late in the campaign. The first important quest is called The High Keep–and we’ve got a High Keep walkthrough for that, too, if you need some tips.

The quest entails climbing the battlements of a fort to rescue the Hippogriff Highwing, a creature that you met earlier in the game. Once that quest is done, the Hippogriff mount will be yours to keep.

Onyx Hippogriff mount

This is a reskin of Highwing, which can only be unlocked if you preordered the game. You can change to another flying mount by opening the Gear menu and clicking on the relevant panel on the right-hand side of the screen.

Thestral mount

The Thestral mount in Hogwarts Legacy requires the purchase of the Dark Arts Pack DLC. By default, this is included in the Deluxe Edition, though it may become available as a standalone purchase down the line. If you own the pack, the Thestral mount is automatically unlocked after completing The High Keep quest.

Graphorn mount

Last but not least, there’s the mighty Graphorn, which is currently the only ground mount in Hogwarts Legacy. This cross between a ram, elephant, and a child of Cthulhu can charge and trample foes. You can unlock this animal mount by finishing the San Bakar’s Trial quest. Eventually, you’ll battle the Graphorn and it will attempt to charge your character during a cutscene. Choose to kneel or attack, then complete the quest.

Hogwarts Legacy is developed by Avalanche Software, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The game has been embroiled in controversy due to transphobic remarks from Harry Potter author JK Rowling. Although she is not personally involved with its development, she stands to profit from its success. For more, read our in-depth article on how Rowling’s comments have impacted the trans community. In this article, you will also find links to trans creators you can support, as well as charities you can donate to.
