How To Make A Boat In Minecraft

Moving around the different biomes in Minecraft is made much easier when you have a vessel that can traverse water. While you’re always free to swim across the ocean, making a boat to do all the heavy lifting for you is a simpler solution. Below, you can see the crafting recipe for a boat in Minecraft and how to use one.

Making a Boat in Minecraft

Newer players might not realize this, but a boat can be one of the first items you craft upon entering a new world. It only requires a single crafting resource and is available right from the start of Minecraft. You can see the Boat’s exact crafting recipe below:

At a crafting table, place five blocks in a “U” shape on the bottom and middle rows (leave the middle box empty)

And that’s all it takes to make a boat. The material of the boat depends on what type of wood planks you use. You can use any wood plank to make a boat, but all six of the planks need to be from the same wood, otherwise the recipe won’t go through. Obtaining planks is extremely simple, as you simply need to chop down some logs from a tree and place the logs in the middle of a crafting table. Then, you can grab the planks and start making your boat along with a base and any other wood-based item in Minecraft.

How to use a boat in Minecraft

To use the boat, equip it on your hotbar, place it in your hand, and then go to a body of water. Right-click on the water and the boat will start floating. You can get in the boat by right-clicking again, and from there, you’re able to steer it in any direction.

Disembarking the boat requires you to press the “Sneak” button, which is Left-Control on keyboard by default. If you’re moving to a new location, you can also break the boat and pick it back up to put it in your inventory, allowing you to use it again later.
