Hulu has released the first official trailer for its upcoming comedy Only Murders in the Building, a spoof of–and homage to–true-crime podcasts and its devoted fandoms. The show, which stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, will hit the streaming service on August 31.
The series cast also includes Amy Ryan (The Office, The Wire) and Selena Gomez (Spring Breakers, 13 Reasons Why). The show began filming in early December 2020, an occasion marked by Martin with a photo shared on Twitter featuring his fellow cast members and crew clad in masks. Eagle-eyed fans will also notice, the new trailer briefly reveals for a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment that Nathan Lane (Modern Family, The Producers) will appear in some capacity. Check it out below.
Co-created and written by Martin and John Hoffman (The Larry Sanders Show, Northern Lights) and based on an idea by Martin, Only Murders in the Building is about three strangers (Martin, Short, Gomez) who live in the same NYC apartment building and also share an obsession with true crime stories–specifically, podcasts–and suddenly find themselves investigating one. The official synopsis goes on from there: “When a grisly death occurs inside their exclusive Upper West Side apartment building, the trio suspects murder and employs their precise knowledge of true crime to investigate the truth. As they record a podcast of their own to document the case, the three unravel the complex secrets of the building which stretch back years.”
Ryan will be playing a musician who lives in the building. Another previously announced cast member, Aaron Dominguez (Shaft, Words on Bathroom Walls), will be playing Oscar, the “son of the building’s super who is returning to the swanky residence after many years.”
