Polygon has reported that the Hunter x Hunter manga will be returning after a four-year hiatus, with the official Shonen Jump Twitter account confirming that the next volume of Hunter x Hunter will be released in Japan on November 4. The last volume was released on October 4, 2018, as creator Yoshihiro Togashi was forced to stop producing the long-running series due to health issues.
Back in May, Togashi joined Twitter and began posting updates on his work, teasing the initial return of the series. While most of the posts were page numbers hiding what was on the actual page, he did tweet out a few more finished drawings and sketches, but nothing definite that would give away the plot.
The premise of Hunter x Hunter takes place in a world where professional adventurers called Hunters take on out-of-this-world tasks and jobs that range from monster hunting to taking down criminals, even treasure hunting and pirating. The story centers around a young boy named Gon Freecs who takes the Hunter Exam in order to find his long-lost father, a former legendary Hunter. During the series, Gon meets Killua, the heir of an infamous assassin family, Kurapika, the sole survivor of a brutal genocide seeking vengeance, and Leorio Paradinight, who wants to be a doctor and treat the impoverished for free.
The Hunter × Hunter manga began its serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump all the way back in March 1998 with Shueisha compiling most of the chapters into individual volumes. As of October 4, 2018, thirty-six volumes have been released.
In April 2005, Viz Media began publishing manga in English in North America, but there is no English release date for the newest volume, but expected sometime next summer.
