Ikumi Nakamura's New Game, Kemuri, Revealed At The Game Awards

At The Game Awards 2023, Ikumi Nakamura appeared on stage to introduce her studio’s first project, Kemuri. Unfortunately, the announcement didn’t come with a gameplay reveal but we at least got a cinematic trailer that marketed the general vibe of the upcoming game.

In the cinematic, you can see a vibrant world that features plenty of Japanese imagery and pop culture as well as colorful characters who are all quite skilled at parkour. The game looks far less spooky than Nakamura’s previous work (which includes the likes of The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo) but still pretty cool.

Now Playing: KEMURI – Teaser Trailer | ▧ UNSEEN

Nakamura first announced her studio, Unseen, in March 2022. In an interview with IGN, Nakamura said the studio features a “mix of cultures” and would act as “a breeding ground for new ideas.”

Oddly enough, in that same interview, Nakamura says that her interests lie in mystery, horror films, zombies, the supernatural, and science-fiction, so she’d likely keep working within those genres. I don’t really pick up on any of those vibes watching the trailer for Kemuri, but maybe the studio is still keeping the full scope of the game’s themes close to the chest.
