DC’s library of animated films is about to expand into some darker territory, as the next film in development is an adaptation of Injustice: Gods Among Us. Set on a parallel Earth that is ruled by a tyrannical Superman who was tricked by the Joker into killing his pregnant wife Lois Lane, the only resistance to Superman’s regime is a ragtag group of rebels led by Batman.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Warner Bros. Animation project is based on both Mortal Kombat developer Netherrealm’s original Injustice game and the first year of the digital web-comic that was written by Tom Taylor and drawn by multiple artists.
The Injustice comics detail the five years in which Batman’s resistance fights back against Superman before eventually drafting in some help from a more united dimension to win the war. There’s plenty of big moments in the first year alone, such as Superman using social media to devastating effect, the destruction of Metropolis, and a headbutt for the ages.
As for the voice cast, Warner Bros. has assembled a massive cast that includes Justin Hartley as Superman, Anson Mount as Batman, Laura Bailey as Lois Lane and Rama Kushna, Zach Callison as Damian Wayne and Jimmy Olsen, Brian T. Delaney as Green Lantern, Brandon Michael Hall as Cyborg, Edwin Hodge as Mr. Terrific and Killer Croc, Oliver Hudson as Plastic Man, Gillian Jacobs as Harley Quinn, and Yuri Lowenthal as Mirror Master, Flash, and Shazam.
The rest of the cast stars Derek Phillips as Nightwing and Aquaman, Kevin Pollak as Joker and Jonathan Kent, Anika Noni Rose as Catwoman, Reid Scott as Green Arrow and Victor Zsasz, Faran Tahir as Ra’s al Ghul, Fred Tatasciore as Captain Atom, Janet Varney as Wonder Woman, and Andrew Morgado as Mirror Master Soldier. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge producer Rick Morales is handling production duties on this film, while Justice League Dark’s Matt Peters steps into the director’s chair.
Until then, there’s no shortage of Warner Bros. Animation films to check out. While the library stretches back to 2007’s Superman: Doomsday, more recent entries include the first film in the two-part Batman: The Long Halloween and the upcoming Mortal Kombat: Battle of the Realms.
