After making a cameo in Barbie as a merman version of Ken, WWE wrestler-turned-actor John Cena has set up his next Mattel movie… and he’ll get to use his legs this time. Cena will star in a movie adaptation of Mattel’s Matchbox line of toy cars.
Hollywood has been trying to make a Hot Wheels movie for years, but it looks like Matchbox will get to the finish line first. Via The Hollywood Reporter, Extraction director Sam Hargrave will helm the film.
We don’t know yet how making a movie about miniature cars is going to work, but that problem is going to have to be solved by screenwriters David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper. Cena has starred in numerous films before, including F9 and Fast X from the Fast and the Furious franchise.
Cena’s in-ring rival, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, revealed that he’s starring in the Monster Truck themed film, Monster Jam, during Disney’s D23. It should be interesting to see which movie hits theaters first: Matchbox or Monster Jam. In the meantime, Cena has announced that he will retire from wrestling at the end of 2025 after one last run with the WWE.
