Nostalgia is a powerful drug, and for the past five years, Reeves has been one of its top suppliers. In 2019, Reeves starred in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. In 2020, he starred in Bill and Ted Face the Music (2020), a sequel to Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey (1991). Next, he starred in The Matrix Resurrections (2021), which was both a sequel and a reboot to the original Matrix trilogy.
And now, Reeves will star in the fourth John Wick film, aptly titled John Wick: Chapter 4. Get ready for kinetic camerawork and wall-splattering headshots. Here’s everything we know about John Wick: Chapter 4 so far.
What’s the release date?
John Wick 4 will debut in theaters on March 24, 2023. Its running time is 2 hours and 49 minutes, which makes it the longest movie in the John Wick franchise so far.
Who’s the director?
Chad Stahelski will direct the film. A stunt performer by trade, Stahelski stood in for actor Brandon Lee to finish The Crow (1994) after Lee’s death. He also doubled for Keanu Reeves in The Matrix (1999) and served as a stunt coordinator.
Stahelski has had creative involvement in every John Wick film to date. He co-directed the first John Wick film with David Leitch (Hobbs and Shaw, Bullet Train), and helmed the following two sequels on his own.
Who’s the writer?
Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3, Army of the Dead) and Michael Finch (Hitman: Agent 47) wrote the screenplay.
Who’s in it?
Keanu Reeves returns as John Wick. Ian McShane returns as Winston Scott, the manager of the Continental hotel that serves as a neutral hub of the criminal underworld. Lance Reddick returns as Charon, the concierge of the Continental and an ally to Wick. And Laurence Fishburne returns as the Bowery King, who heads an intelligence network staffed by the homeless and other downtrodden–and birds
Joining the cast are Donnie Yen (Ip Man) as antagonist Caine, Scott Adkins (Ip Man 4, Wolf Warrior), and Bill Skarsgård (It, Eternals, Barbarian).
What’s the story?
The new movie picks up where Chapter 3 left off, and pits John Wick against the High Table, a collective of 12 powerful crime lords from across the globe. This is the same group that marked Wick for death in Chapter 2, after his unsanctioned murder of Santino D’Antonio in the Continental. In Chapter 3, the High Table made multiple attempts on Wick’s life, and all attempts to reach a truce broke down. A final showdown seems imminent.
Are there any trailers for the movie
There are two trailers out. You can watch the first one, released three months ago, here. A new trailer, released on February 15, can be found here.
Production company Lionsgate released the following synopsis:
John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating The High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.
What has Reeves said about the film?
Reeves has stated that of all the John Wick films, Chapter 4 has the most action “by a good margin.” Reeves also revealed that in addition to training with weapons, he trained with cars: “There’s 180s, forward-into-reverse 180s, reverse into-forward 720s, drifting… So it was really fun to get a chance to learn those skills, and to play.”
Is this the final John Wick film?
No, it’s not. Director Stahelski has said as much, and that the current plan is for the franchise to continue. Reeves is a bit more reserved about John Wick: Chapter 5, stating that the fan demand needs to be there for the core franchise to continue.
Despite this, spin-off projects are already in the works. A movie starring Ana de Armas, called The Ballerina, will follow young assassin Rooney, who made an appearance in Chapter 3 and seeks revenge for her family. A three-part TV series prequel, titled The Continental, is also in production, and will follow a young Winston as he builds his hotel for high-end hitmen.
Lastly, Lionsgate is fielding proposals for a video game company to develop a AAA John Wick video game.
