Legendary Is Developing A Pacific Rim Prequel Series

In 2013, director Guillermo del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham co-wrote the script for Pacific Rim, a movie that pit giant monsters against giant robots piloted by two-man teams. The film spawned a sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, in 2018. But aside from the two-season run of the anime, Pacific Rim: The Black on Netflix, the franchise has been largely dormant since then. Now, Legendary Entertainment has revealed plans to make a Pacific Rim prequel series, and a creative team is already in place.

Via Variety, Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis are developing the Pacific Rim prequel series, which will presumably expand upon the origin sequence from the first film. As related in that movie, giant alien monsters called Kaiju broke through to our world through an interdimensional portal at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean. To fight back, humanity created Jaegers, massive mechs that require two or more pilots who can share a mental link.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself, said Legendary TV President Jason Clodfelter in a statement. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

Heisserer’s previous credits include Arrival, Bird Box, Lights Out, Hours, Bloodshot, and the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street that was released in 2010. Heisserer also developed the Shadow and Bone series for Netflix.

The Pacific Rim prequel series doesn’t currently have a network or a streaming service attached to it.
