Like the previous three Life Is Strange games, True Colors is a very choice-heavy, story-driven game. Among those choices is the option to romance one of two characters, one of which is a familiar face from Life Is Strange: Before The Storm‘s Steph.
On her first day in Haven Springs, protagonist Alex Chen meets several folks in her brother Gabe’s life, including Ryan and Steph, both of whom can become good friends with Alex. But if you play your cards right, Alex can romance either one of them.

Now Playing: Life is Strange: True Colors – Official Announcement Reveal Trailer
We’ve never seen Ryan before; he’s a new character for Life Is Strange. In the trailer for True Colors, Gabe describes Ryan as his best friend and we see Ryan aiding Alex in her investigation into her brother’s death, so he seems like a decent enough chap.
However, as mentioned before, we have met Steph. She is one of the classmates to Before The Storm protagonist Chloe Price and can be seen in all three episodes. She’s into RPGs, sci-fi movies, and plenty of other geeky pastimes; she’s also a pretty good artist.
In Before The Storm, Chloe jots down that Steph is pretty open when it comes to her sexuality, writing, “Another thing about Steph: she’s into girls, and she doesn’t give a shit what anyone else thinks about it.”
With how much older Steph looks in True Colors in comparison to Before The Storm, it gives us a general idea of where this new Life Is Strange fits into the series’ overall timeline. Given Steph is in high school in Before The Storm (which takes place in 2010) and now looks to be a young adult living on her own in True Colors, the events of True Colors likely occur around the same time or just after Life Is Strange 2 (which takes place in late 2016, early 2017).
We still don’t know how True Colors’ overall story could change depending on whether you romance Ryan or Steph, but developer Deck Nine has said that the stories tied to getting closer to the two are different. Both are fleshed out and impactful.
True Colors is scheduled to launch on September 10, and it won’t be episodic. You can preorder the game now. But that’s not all the Life Is Strange we’re getting this year. In the fall, Life Is Strange: Remastered Collection will release; the collection contains remasters of the first two Life Is Strange games.
