Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s new animated movie, Vivo, is now headed to Netflix. The movie was previously scheduled for a theatrical release through Sony Pictures on June 4, but now it will come to Netflix. A release date has not been announced.
Netflix acquired the global rights to Vivo for all regions except China, according to Deadline. Vivo was directed by Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and Brandon Jeffords (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2). Miranda wrote and performed original songs for it.
The first trailer is out now–check it out below. The movie features new songs by Miranda, alongside a score by Alex Lacamoire.
“I understand this is a similar deal to Netflix’s pickup of Sony’s Kevin Hart movie Fatherhood whereby Netflix gets the first window, which is streaming, and Sony will retain home entertainment and linear TV rights to all other territories, including China theatrical, after the pic’s exclusive run on the streamer,” Deadline reported.
This deal is outside of Sony’s other agreement with Netflix that will see movies like Uncharted, Morbius, and others come to Netflix … eventually.
Miranda voices a honey bear in Vivo while Juan de Marcos Gonzalez plays his owner, Andres. They live in Havana and although they don’t speak the same language, they communicate through music.
“When tragedy strikes shortly after Andrés receives a letter from the famous Marta Sandoval (Gloria Estefan), inviting her old partner to her farewell concert in Miami with the hope of reconnecting, it’s up to Vivo to deliver a message that Andrés never could: A love letter to Marta, written long ago, in the form of a song. Yet in order to get to the distant shores of Miami, Vivo will need to accept the help of Gabi (newcomer Ynairaly Simo)–an energetic tween who bounces to the beat of her own offbeat drum,” reads a line from the movie’s description.
Miranda said in a statement: “I’m so excited Vivo will have a home at Netflix, where kids of all ages will be able to enjoy the film’s songs and adventures again and again.”
Zoe Saldana, Michael Rooker, Brian Tyree Henry, Nicole Byer, and Leslie David Baker also have voiceover roles in Vivo.
