Lord of the Rings actors Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen have commented on the plans to make additional Lord of the Rings films and touched on whether or not they would come back for them.
Wood, who played Frodo in the Oscar-winning series from director Peter Jackson, told JoBlo that it would be “pretty incredible” to make more movies in New Zealand with the architects of the series–Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens. “Jumping back into a world that’s so beloved and means so much to me. So yeah, it would be awesome,” he said.
As for Mortensen, who played Aragorn, he told The Toronto Sun that he only just started hearing about the next film, tentatively titled The Hunt for Gollum, when journalists asked for his opinion. He said he understands the team is “serious” about trying to make the movie, but said he’s “not sure how they’re going to do it or what their intentions are.” Mortensen went on to say he looks forward to talking with the filmmakers, but it’s too soon to say if Mortensen could come back as Aragorn.
“It was a great experience to be part of the Tolkien universe and everything he based those stories on. They tapped into everything that I’ve liked–Celtic mythology and Nordic mythology and history–so it would be great to be involved in that again, but I have very little that I can say about it,” he said.
Mortensen went on to discuss how starring in The Lord of the Rings series changed his life. He said it helped him land roles, like his leading part in David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence, but his professional goals as an actor did not change due to the success of the fantasy films.
“Some people just want to make lots of money and be famous, and that’s fine. But my goal didn’t really change after Lord of the Rings. Before that, I was trying to be in good stories that would be memorable and worth the effort it took to participate in them,” he said.
The Hunt for Gollum, which is only a working title, is set to be directed by Lord of the Rings veteran Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original series. The film is targeting a 2026 release. Given the title, it sounds like the film could tell the story of when Gandalf dispatched Aragorn to… hunt for Gollum to try to stop him from telling Sauron’s forces about it.
Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, has said he would play Gandalf again if he’s not dead yet.
