Lord Of The Rings Was Allowed One Swear Per Film, Actors Offer Other Options

Hobbits just want to have fun and on the latest episode of their podcast The Friendship Onion, Lord of the Ring stars Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan hit the censor button hard when bleeping out possibilities of where swear words could have gone in the script. Originally started on the LOTR Reddit page, the two actors read out suggestions from fans about where they would put one in the respective character’s voice.

Over at the podcast’s Instagram, Boyd and Monaghan posted a snippet of the episode giving examples.

“I’ve got one here on my Instagram,” Monaghan said. “I’ll do my best Ian McKellan impression here. ‘A wizard is never late, Frodo Baggins, nor is he early. He arrives precisely when he f—— means to.’ Not bad, not bad!”

The two exchange quotes back and forth, with Monaghan ending with a Pippin line. “Alright, where the f— are we going?”

There is not a whole lot of swearing in the actual material from Tolkien, as well as the movies themselves. Samwise may have uttered a “drafted” and dwarves and elves have their own colloquialisms, so there aren’t really swears in the actual lexicon…unless you count the Black Tongue as the ultimate form of curse words.

You can listen to this episode, as well as the rest of the show here where they talk to a fantasy map maker.
