Luigi Actor Charlie Day Has Begun Recording Mario Movie But Admits, "I Know Nothing"

Actor Charlie Day is voicing Luigi in the upcoming Super Mario movie, and now the It’s Always Sunny star has shared as much information about the film as he can–and it’s not very much. Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Day he’s forbidden to discuss specifics, joking that Universal and Nintendo would hurt him physically if he divulged any secrets.

“I’d love to tell you all about it, but they are top secret with this stuff. Absolutely, this is serious stuff,” Day said.

Day has begun recording his lines for the Mario movie, but he hasn’t seen the script and acknowledges that he doesn’t know anything about the story. “I know nothing. I show up, and they’re like, ‘You say this and you say that.’ And it’s all very funny and good. And then I walk out and there’s like two guys in overalls with hammers that are like, ‘Don’t you tell nobody nothing about this, Charlie. I swear to God we’re gonna get your kneecaps, we’re gonna break your neck.'”

Day went on to joke that Mario is probably kept in the loop since he’s the star and Luigi must, once again, play second fiddle. “You know, Mario is probably in the know–they don’t tell Luigi anything,” Day said.

Finally, Day confirmed that he does not record in-person with Chris Pratt as Mario at the same time; instead, the actors go into the recording booth one at a time to record their lines.

In addition to Day and Pratt, the Mario movie cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. Charles Martinet, who voices Mario in the video games, will have “surprise cameos.” The film opens in theaters this December 21, 2022. A Donkey Kong spin-off might come next.
