Artificial intelligence is a hot topic in 2024, and Blumhouse is attempting to cash in with not only an AI-inspired sequel to the breakout hit M3gan, but now a spin-off about a romatic doll that comes to life. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blumhouse is moving ahead with a film titled Soulm8te that’s described as an “erotic thriller.”
“The film sees a man acquires an artificially intelligent android to cope with the loss of his recently deceased wife. In an attempt to create a truly sentient partner, he inadvertently turns a harmless lovebot into a deadly soulmate,” reads a line from the movie’s description.
Blumhouse is partnering with James Wan’s Atomic Monster on the spin-off after both companies enjoyed great success with the original M3gan film.
Soulm8te is being fast-tracked for release and already has a date on the calendar: January 2, 2026, with Universal on board to distribute.
You Are Not My Mother director Kate Dolan has signed on to direct Soulm8te. She re-wrote the script, too, following an earlier draft by Salvage Marines writer Rafael Jordan. Jordan, Wan, and Ingrid Bisu are attributed with coming up with the story.
“Fundamentally, I view this film as an exploration of relationships and loneliness,” Dolan said in a statement. “Despite technological advances, there are enduring human truths we cannot escape, and I am looking forward to delving into those depths.”
As for the M3gan sequel, M3gan 2.0 releases on June 27, 2025. As mentioned, the sequel delves further into AI, with Wan saying, “We’re exploring the AI universe even further” with the sequel.
Blumhouse is also making a Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel and recently announced ambitious plans in the video game space.
