Manny Jacinto has discussed having all of his dialogue cut from Top Gun: Maverick, saying at the end of the day, Tom Cruise made a movie for Tom Cruise. Speaking to GQ, Jacinto said the fact that his screentime was reduced to mere seconds and all of his lines of dialogue were cut “fuels” him as an actor.
He said the “little bit” of outcry from fans about his presence in the film being cut down was “flattering,” but he said he wasn’t shocked to have his part reduced so significantly.
“There was this sense of where the film was going [on set], like I can see them focusing the camera more on these [other] guys and not taking so much time on our scenes,” he said. “Fortunately, it still was a great experience–you get to see this huge machine at work, see how Tom Cruise works, and you get to be a small part of this huge franchise.”
“Because at the end of the day, Tom Cruise is writing stories for Tom Cruise,” he added. “It’s up to us–Asian Americans, people of color–to be that [for ourselves]. We can’t wait for somebody else to do it. If we want bigger stories out there, we have to make them for ourselves.”
Prior to Maverick’s release, Jacinto told a Philippines news outlet that he was excited about the project in part because he met other Filipino people in the Navy and Air Force during his training. “And to be able to represent that for them and have their face kind of represented, it meant a lot,” he said.
Jacinto’s latest project is Star Wars: The Acolyte, which just wrapped up on Disney+. For more, check out GameSpot’s breakdown of the Season 1 finale, including all the plot holes and burning questions.
