Barbie star Margot Robbie doesn’t sound like someone who’s itching to jump back into a pink convertible on the silver screen again for a sequel. In fact, the actress “can’t imagine” what a follow-up would even be like for the biggest movie of the year.
Speaking with the AP, Robbie explained how “we put everything into this one” and it wasn’t meant “to be a trilogy.” She added: “It was like, great to put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Barbie made over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, ultimately besting Harry Potter to become Warner Bros. biggest movie ever. Filmmaker Greta Gerwig is also the highest-grossing female director of all time in the US after the movie’s success.
In addition, the box office triumph also means a Barbie sequel is basically inevitable, with or without Robbie returning. In fact, Mattel is reportedly planning over a dozen toy-adaptation films, including Barney and Hot Wheels, produced by Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams.
While it’s available to rent and buy digitally now, Barbie should arrive on Max soon. The blockbuster movie was revealed to be coming to the streaming service this fall, and the season doesn’t even have quite a month left.
