Earlier this year, there were reports that Marvel’s What If…? series may be ending after Season 3. However, a new interview with Marvel Studio’s Head of Streaming, Television and Animation Brad Winderbaum doesn’t frame the upcoming third season as a conclusion for the show. But it does sound like it will mark the end of The Watcher’s story.
Via EW, Winderbaum appeared on the Official Marvel Podcast and teased What If…? Season 3 as the culmination of a trilogy about Jeffrey Wright’s Uatu aka The Watcher.
“It feels like the completion of a trilogy,” said Winderbaum. “It takes us to places that you’d never expect. It goes beyond the first two seasons in its exploration of the multiverse. It pulls in characters that are very unexpected, and has what I think is an extremely moving and very fulfilling culmination for Uatu the Watcher.”
The end of Season 2 left Uatu with Captain Carter (Haley Atwell), who urged him to show her more of the multiverse before sending her back to her own reality. It’s unknown if that dynamic will be explored in Season 3. But if the show does extend to a fourth season, there is a precedent for moving beyond The Watcher. Uatu was the narrator of What If…? comic book series before it shifted to stories without a host or a narrator. Perhaps the show could continue in the same way.
Marvel hasn’t set a date for What If…? Season 3 yet.
