Hunting vampires isn’t for the faint of heart. As such, Marvel’s Blade might not be as family friendly as most of the MCU, with director Yann Demange claiming “they gave me the R, which is so important.” That seems to indicate the movie starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali could be the second R-rated MCU film after Deadpool 3.
Demange (White Boy Rick, Lovecraft Country) opened up about Blade while talking with Deadline about his personal short film Dammi. It’s a project that tackles the filmmaker’s upbringing in foster homes and how he felt like an outsider, especially as a kid with Algerian and Muslim roots. This perspective should resonate as he moves on to tackle Blade, which was put on hold because of the Hollywood writers strike.
“I come out of this wanting to be more open, more vulnerable and bring a more personal aspect to my work,” Demange said. “But for Blade, we are going to have fun because Mahershala is such a deep actor. I’m excited to show a kind of ruthlessness, a roughness he has, that allows him to walk the earth in a particular way.
“I love him for that. He’s got a dignity and integrity, but there is a ferocity there that he usually keeps under the surface. I want to unleash that and put it on the screen.”
Late last year, Demange was brought on to direct Blade after Bassam Tariq left the project. Earlier this year, Blade also reportedly added True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto as writer for the superhero movie. It’s been a tumultuous production for the vampire-centric flick ever since Blade was originally announced in 2019.
Blade is currently planned to premiere in theaters on February 14, 2025–Valentine’s Day.
