Minecraft might finally be coming to current generation console, if a new age rating is to be believed.
According to a user on Twitter, Minecraft has been rated in Germany for the Xbox Series X|S. The game doesn’t have any native versions for the current generation of consoles yet, so this rating suggests that this might change soon. However, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of the game are playable via backwards compatibility on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, respectively.
GameSpot has reached out to Microsoft for more information.
During the FTC trial regarding Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, Xbox’s Phil Spencer blamed Sony for the lack of a native PlayStation 5 version of Minecraft. He stated that Sony didn’t send Microsoft any development kits of PlayStation 5 ahead of the console’s launch in 2020.
Since the rating only mentions an Xbox Series X|S version and doesn’t include a PS5 version, it’s possible that Microsoft has only worked on a native version for its own console while unable to work on a PS5 one due to the lack of development kits.
The latest entry in the Minecraft franchise is Minecraft Legends, a real-time strategy game. In GameSpot’s Minecraft Legends review, we said, “Minecraft Legends has a lot of good ideas, but the combat mechanics aren’t suited for actively engaging in the act of war.”
