Minecraft Will Stop Supporting VR Headsets Early Next Year

There are only a handful of months left to play Minecraft in VR. That’s because developer Mojang is ditching support for VR and mixed-reality headsets in March 2025.

Mojang detailed this major shift in VR support as part of a Minecraft: Bedrock Edition changelog published this week. “Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025, when you will receive your final update,” the notes read. It’s also confirmed that “you will no longer be able to use your VR/MR device with Minecraft” after this update, though any purchases and worlds will continue to work on say a regular PC.

Minecraft first got official VR support with Oculus in 2016. Then, in 2020, Minecraft got PlayStation VR support with two different modes: immersive and living room. That means the sandbox game has been available in VR for almost a full decade.

While VR support ends, a native Minecraft PS5 edition just launched for Sony’s system with 4K visuals at 60fps. It’s part of the Bundles of Bravery drop, which also introduced a new Hardcore difficulty mode to the sandbox title.

Meanwhile, the Meta Quest 3S VR headset just arrived earlier this month, and it comes bundled with Batman: Arkham Shadow. For more, check out GameSpot’s 25 best VR games to play around with in 2024.
