A new trailer for the Mortal Kombat movie is out now, and it shows many of the series’ famous characters–or kharacters–battling it out with their signature attacks. And this time, the film won’t be limited by a pesky PG-13 rating. That means we might actually see a Fatality move on par with the games. Maybe.
The trailer opens with Liu Kang explaining that “Mortal Kombat has begun” before we see a montage of the series’ biggest characters battling it out. They include Kano, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, and Jax, and we also get a look at some of the supernatural powers the fighters use. Sub-Zero throws a pile of ice down a street, while Raiden uses his signature lightning ability.

Now Playing: Mortal Kombat Movie – Official Character Lore Trailer
Scorpion, seen early in the trailer without his mask, utters his famous “Get over here!” line near the end of the trailer, and we also see a very brief look at Goro in his CGI glory. In the original film from 1995, this character was animatronic and its constant maintenance sometimes forced the crew to pause filming.
The new Mortal Kombat movie also includes an original character named Cole Young, played by Lewis Tan (Wu Assassin’s, Deadpool 2). The cast is a mix of actors and professional martial artists, with Sub-Zero being played by Joe Taslim, who previously starred in Indonesian action films like The Night Comes For Us and The Raid. The former film is available on Netflix now and its violence level rivals anything the Mortal Kombat filmmakers may have done.
Mortal Kombat releases on HBO Max and in theaters on April 16.
