Mortal Kombat Movie Writer Greg Russo Joins System Shock TV Series To Write And Direct

The upcoming System Shock TV show in the works at the streaming company Binge has hired Greg Russo to write and direct the series. Russo wrote 2021’s much-loved Mortal Kombat movie for New Line (which is getting a sequel with a new writer). He will also be an executive producer on the System Shock show alongside Binge’s Allan Ungar, and Stephen Kick and Larry Kuperman from Nightdive Studios.

Russo is well-versed in the video game space, as he also wrote the upcoming Space Invaders and Saints Row films. He is making his directorial debut with the System Shock show.

Russo said in a statement, “I’m honored to have the opportunity to work alongside the fantastic team at Binge and Nightdive Studios to bring the iconic System Shock franchise to life. I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to make my directorial debut, and I finally found it.”

Ungar, who previously directed the Uncharted fan movie starring Nathan Fillion and Stephen Lang, said Russo is a “superbly talented screenwriter who possesses an unmatched knowledge and passion for gaming.”

Ungar added: “His artistic approach to storytelling and his deep understanding of the source material will undoubtedly get fans excited about this new franchise. We’re thrilled to be bringing him on board and can’t wait to share his vision with audiences worldwide.”

The original System Shock was released in 1994 and developed by Looking Glass, with Doug Church directing and Warren Spector producing. Nightdive Studios now owns the rights to the series and is remaking the original game.

System Shock is just the latest project in the works at Binge, following the announcement of a Driver TV show based on Ubisoft’s series and a show based on Crytek’s Hunt: Showdown. Additionally, Binge is working with El Rubius for a new show called Rubius Checkpoint.

Binge was announced during E3 2021. It will focus on producing streaming video content specifically for gamers. The company is aiming to do it “in a way that respects the fans and the games that inspire them,” Bingie says. Binge is scheduled to launch in 2022.

Binge has a feature called Squad Parties which allows users to watch together and earn rewards for doing so. You can sign up for updates on Binge’s website here.
