Legendary actor Brian Cox has shared his unfiltered thoughts about the state of movies, saying Marvel and DC are to blame for cinema being in a “very bad way.” Speaking at the Edinburgh International Film Festival, Cox said cinema has “lost its place” in part because of the “grandiose element between Marvel, DC, and all of that.”
“I think cinema is in a very bad way,” he added, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “And I think it’s beginning to implode, actually. You’re kind of losing the plot.”
Cox commented on the recent success of Deadpool & Wolverine, saying movies like that are “making a lot of money that’ll make everybody happy,” but there could be consequences down the road.
Cox added that he’s also done these kinds of movies, having appeared in X2: X-Men United as William Stryker. “So it’s just become a party time for certain actors to do this stuff,” he said. “When you know that Hugh Jackman can do a bit more, Ryan Reynolds… but it’s because they go down that road and it’s box office. They make a lot of money. You can’t knock it.”
Cox is known for being outspoken and speaking his mind. In 2023, Cox talked about “woke culture” and how millennials are to blame. He also discussed his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong’s proclivity for method-acting, saying it’s “f**king annoying.”
One of Cox’s next roles is another major franchise: The Lord of the Rings. He’s the voice of Helm Hammerhand in the The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which comes to theaters this December.
