Netflix Removes Cheapest Subscription Plan In US And UK

Netflix has made further changes to its subscription offerings, this time cutting the cheapest option in the US and UK. The $10/month (£7) Basic plan is no longer an option for new or returning members.

Anyone currently on the Basic plan can keep it so long as they don’t cancel or modify their subscription. Netflix now has three subscription plans, including Standard with ads ($7/month), Standard ($15.50/month), and Premium ($20/month).

Netflix’s Basic plan was removed in Canada in June, at which time many wondered if it might also get cut in other parts of the world. Before it was removed entirely, Netflix hid the existence of the plan, only showing it when new users clicked “see all plans,” according to The Verge.

Netflix will release its latest earnings report today, July 19, so the company might soon discuss this change and share more details about its business operations.

In other news, Netflix recently began seriously cracking down on password-sharing. As expected, this led to a massive surge in new subscribers. The company is also making a big play in the world of video games, recently hiring former Halo boss Joseph Staten to make a AAA multiplatform game.
