Arkane Studios and Bethesda gave us a fresh look at the cooperative action game Redfall during the Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase. The new IP from the developer behind Prey and Dishonored is shaping up to be one of the biggest upcoming Xbox games.
As seen in the new gameplay trailer, Redfall looks a whole lot like Arkane Austin’s take on a Borderlands game, with Layla being the coolest-looking character with telekinetic Siren-like powers. All four characters can utilize the assortment of firearms that you can find in the game, but each vampire hunter has their own unique skill set that informs their respective combat style.

Now Playing: Redfall Gameplay Reveal | Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase 2022
Redfall is fully open-world, rewarding inquisitive players with plenty to explore and discover. “I think there are advantages to the kinds of games that we’ve made like Dishonored and Prey where it’s very single-player,” Arkane Austin studio director Harvey Smith told GameSpot. “But with an open world, you can go anywhere. You can be meaning to go here, but look out across a baseball diamond and a graveyard and a trailer park and see something that you want to do over there and then get into this whole thing because the AI heard you and followed you and kited you into something else. And then you wander upon a vignette of some petrified vampires and a UV light on a tripod because some lady sniper from Bellwether set up a tripod there with UV lights and turned them off so that the vampires start thawing out and she’s fighting for her life and you can just walk off or you can help her, or you help [the vampires]. And suddenly an hour has passed and you’re just like, ‘Oh my God, I haven’t even gotten to the mission yet.’ And that’s really what we love about open-world games.”
Previously planned to release this year, Redfall–much like Starfield–was later delayed to 2023 in order to allow for more polishing time. It’s Arkane Austin’s most-recent game following Prey. The studio has been working on Redfall while its sister studio, Arkane Lyon, was developing Deathloop, a PS5 timed console exclusive that should come to Xbox Series X|S eventually.
