A new Star Trek movie from the director of the Star Wars TV show Andor is reportedly in the works as part of Paramount’s plans to expand the Star Trek movie universe.
According to Deadline, Paramount has hired Andor director Toby Haynes to direct “a new film that expands on the Star Trek universe.” Seth Grahame-Smith, who previously wrote The Lego Batman Movie and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, is writing the script. J.J. Abrams’ production company Bad Robot will produce the movie, according to the report.
Deadline stated that the new Star Trek movie is an “origin story” that takes place decades prior to the events of the 2009 Star Trek reboot that featured Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. Paramount is also moving ahead with a fourth movie in the reboot series, the report said.
2016’s Star Trek Beyond is the latest entry in the main Star Trek movie series, but the franchise has lived long and prospered with the TV shows Picard and Strange New Worlds.
The 2009 Star Trek reboot and its 2013 sequel Into Darkness were directed by Abrams, before he handed off directing duties to Justin Lin for Star Trek Beyond. The three movies collectively earned around $1.2 billion at the global box office.
In addition to Pine and Quinto, the movies starred Simon Pegg as Scotty, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Dr. McCoy, John Cho as Sulu, and Anton Yelchin as Chekov. Yelchin tragically died in 2016 at the age of 27 after a motor vehicle accident in his driveway.
