Nvidia is adding DLSS support to a number of new games, including for the first time ever, some virtual reality titles.
DLSS, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, is an Nvidia-exclusive process that uses a neural network to upscale images in games. The result from this extremely complex bit of tech is a noticeable boost to framerate when playing games at higher resolutions such as 4K. Essentially, DLSS is why gaming at 60fps or over at 4K on PC is possible. Of course, if you don’t have a 4K monitor DLSS can still give your games a massive framerate boost, and that goes double if you’re running them with ray tracing enabled.
No Man’s Sky distinctly shows the difference in performance that comes with DLSS support. A video released on the Hello Games founder Sean Murray’s Twitter account today shows the game in action with DLSS turned on. Running at 4K at high settings, the game receives a massive boost in performance with DLSS on, running at nearly twice the frame rate at some points. It’s also important to note that an Nvidia RTX 2060 Super is used in this demonstration, a last-gen graphics card that is easily outperformed by most members of Nvidia’s 30 Series GPU lineup.

Sadly, DLSS isn’t available for anyone rocking an AMD graphics card in their PC. AMD is developing its own version of the upscaling tech though, called FidelityFX Super Resolution. A release date for AMD’s version of the upscaling tech has not been announced, but in a chat with PCWorld, AMD vice president of graphics (yes, that’s a real title) said that the process would be releasing sometime this year.
