When Hideo Kojima unveiled his newest game OD last week, the teaser trailer probably created more questions than answers. Apparently the Death Stranding director provided a fun Easter egg as well–a possible reference to his canceled Konami project Silent Hills.
VGC backed up what Central Xbox first noticed in the OD trailer, which are letters briefly appearing in the mouth of actor Udo Kier. Five letters show up above his tongue to create the word “Atami.” That’s the name of a seaside city found within the Shizuoka Prefecture, and this is reportedly where the Silent Hills reference comes into play. Spelled out in Kanji, Shizuoka can be separated and translated to Silent Hill.

Now Playing: OD | A New Hideo Kojima Game – TGA 2023 Teaser Trailer
Why Kojima would reference the canceled project–if that is in fact the motive behind this–is anyone’s guess. Though maybe it’s more straightforward and signaling one of the locations for OD instead? Silent Hills was infamously canned by Konami in 2015 and part of a messy split between the video game company and Kojima.
OD was officially announced at The Game Awards last week, with Kojima revealing he’s partnering with Get Out filmmaker Jordan Peele on the Xbox Game Studios title. Along with Kier, Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) and Sophia Lillis (It, Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) will also appear in the game.
It was one of the biggest announcements at The Game Awards this year.
