Pixar’s Toy Story spin-off Lightyear will be available to stream on Disney+ starting August 3. The company released a new spot for the movie below to celebrate its arrival on streaming, which you can watch below.
“Lightyear looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said Angus MacLane, who made his solo feature directorial debut with Lightyear. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see Lightyear, it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”
Despite MacLane’s enthusiasm present in the quote above, he and others at Pixar have been saying they don’t believe that spin-offs are the studio’s future, and they’re not projects he would recommend to up-and-coming directors. Speaking with GameSpot, MacLane said these types of projects are “so, so hard,” and producer Galyn Susman added that it’s only suitable for filmmakers with a passion for the characters.
As those recent comments and Lightyear’s less than stellar performance at the box office indicate, the film may stand as an interesting anomaly among the studio’s catalog. However, that’s not to say that the movie didn’t garner some fans and win over some audiences. GameSpot’s Lightyear review scored the film a 9/10. Reviewer Chris E. Hayner said, “Lightyear is a huge win for Pixar after not seeing its movies be in theaters for over two years. It’s funny, heartfelt, beautifully made, and a great example of how to expand on an existing franchise without diluting it.”
