While several of these are DVD releases, the nice thing with anime is that even in 480p, it often looks brilliant. One of the highlights here is Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, as this has been discounted to just $19 (normally $31). While Final Fantasy: Spirits Within was sadly a box-office bomb, Square Enix didn’t throw in the towel on its CGI-animated ventures, and for its follow-up, it returned to Midgar for a direct sequel to Final Fantasy 7.
The movie still holds up pretty well and the overall animation is still impressive–especially the battle sequences–and this is the “complete” version that sports a number of extras. In addition to this being a 4K remaster, this director’s cut contains 26 minutes of additional footage and over 1,000 revised scenes, making it the definitive version. Then there’s Cowboy Bebop, a landmark anime series that still oozes style 25 years after it was first released.
Both of the 25th-anniversary editions are on sale, but the special edition is the one to get, as it has extra discs full of special features to show you just how this beloved show was made. It’s $25.50 compared to the regular edition ($21) but you can’t go wrong with either one. Another classic to recommend is Paprika: a pretty trippy movie that has been a major source of inspiration to several of the biggest directors in Hollywood. This version of the film comes inside of a stunning steelbook cover, and in 4K, its visuals are a sight to behold. If you feel like punishing yourself, there’s the infamously terrible 2016 Berserk series, but for a visual treat, the classic Dragon Ball movies are much better.
