An extended preview for Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin, one of the big games headed exclusively to PS5 this year, was shown during the January 2024 State of Play. Alongside a closer look at combat and some slick cinematics, the PS5 exclusive was given a release date of March 22.
The detailed trailer showed lots of the action-heavy combat, from taking on human enemies in one-on-one duels to fighting more fearsome and otherworldly bosses, including the occasional use of a firearm. We also got a look at traversal on horseback and via rooftops with a grappling hook, some brief snippets of cinematic cutscenes hinting at the story.

Now Playing: Rise of the Ronin – Gameplay Overview Trailer
First revealed at The Game Awards last year, Rise of the Ronin is set in war-torn 19th-century Japan, a pivotal time for the country as as war, disease, and political unrest broke out across the land. As a wandering ronin, players will forge their own legend during the Bakumatsu period. Unlike the fantasy settings of Team Ninja’s other games, like Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Rise of the Ronin dives deeper into the history of Japan during this tumultuous period.
Players will be able to meet actual historical figures, as well as see the story unfold in different ways depending on the choices they make. As for the gameplay, Team Ninja is aiming to offer a sharp balance between engaging and accessible combat, as players can hone their skills with swords and guns.
Rise of the Ronin will launch for PS5 on March 22.
