PS5 System Update Out Now, Doesn't Do Much

After a few major updates to the PS5’s operating system, the latest system update is here–and it doesn’t do much. The most recent update only has one line in its patch notes and is focused on system performance, meaning most PS5 players won’t notice much of a difference.

Compared to previous updates that have added new features and changed the console’s UI to make it easier to use, the latest update only has one note: “This system software update improves system performance.” the update brings the PS5 system up to version 23.02-08.20.02.

Now Playing: Live from PS5 – Bringing You The Extraordinary | PS5

As a minor update, you won’t have to install the new version before getting into your online gaming on the PS5, but as a relatively small update of 851MB, it won’t take long to download anyway.

The PS5 has had a few major updates this year, with one adding support for Discord and VRR 1440p support, while a later update improved accessibility features and made it easier to connect with friends.

Sony hasn’t yet revealed what’s planned for future system updates. One upgrade that’s often requested by fans is enabling dynamic themes for the PS5, a popular feature for the PS4 that so far hasn’t made the jump to the newest generation of consoles.

PS5 System Update Out Now, Doesn't Do Much

The newest PlayStation 5 system software update is out now, but don’t get too excited. The October 5 update is all about improving system performance and not adding new features. That may not be all that exciting, but better performance is always good.

The new PS5 update brings the system up to version 22.02-06.00.01. The single-sentence patch notes posted on PlayStation’s website state: “This system software update improves system performance.”

Now Playing: God of War Ragnarök – State of Play Sep 2022 Story Trailer

Though this update didn’t do much, an update released in September added 1440p support and folders, among other new features, as part of a much more sizable change for the console.

In addition to this update, the PS5 added a new app this week for Disney Plus. Previously, PS5 owners needed to use the PS4 app on PS5, but the new, native version has arrived with support for 4K HDR and more.

There has been plenty of big PlayStation news of late, including first word that the PS5 has been jailbroken and that a Horizon Zero Dawn PS5 remake and a Horizon multiplayer game are reportedly in the works.

The next major PlayStation game is God of War: Ragnarok, which releases in November for both PS5 and PS4.

PS5 System Update Out Now, Doesn't Do Much

If you powered on your PlayStation 5 console today, you were likely prompted with a message to download and install the latest firmware update that goes by the exotic name of Version: 21.02-04.51.00.

Just like the last several updates, this one doesn’t do much besides improving system performance. It has been a while since Sony introduced a substantial update to the console, with the last notable release coming in the Version: 21.02-04.00.00 patch back in September 2021.

Now Playing: 9 Hidden PS5 Features

That allowed for an M.2 SSD drive to be installed into the console’s expansion slot and recognized, 3D audio support for speakers, and for games to more clearly differentiate which console version you were about to install. Social interaction through the game base was also enhanced, and trophy-hunting fans had more options available to them for keeping track of their in-game accomplishments.

There are still a number of other features on PS5 fans’ wishlist currently, such as emulation of older games, holding down the PlayStation home button to bring up power options, and dedicated folder organization. Some of us really want to be able to create a folder that’s just for our Yakuza game collection.

As for what’s next for Sony, you can tune into this week’s PlayStation State of Play to see a lineup of Japanese-published games coming to both PS4 and PS5. Sony says the livestream will run for 20 minutes and will showcase new games, provide updates on previously announced titles, and can be accessed via Twitch and YouTube.

For more details on the schedule, you can check out our how to watch PlayStation State of Play feature.
