Purge Creator James DeMonaco Is Already Thinking About The Sequel

No one would blame you if you thought The Forever Purge, which hits theaters on Friday, was the last installment of the franchise, which has now spanned five movies and two seasons of television–even writer James DeMonaco thought so. But DeMonaco still has ideas rolling around in his head, he said in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“I thought it was [the final Purge film],” said DeMonaco who wrote all five Purge films and directed the first three in the series. “It was like, this is it, my end of America, America is burning. So that was the initial intent.”

“I’m going to be completely honest, I came up with something about two months ago. I woke up with a new way that we can keep it fresh and turn the thing upside down. So if people want it, the idea’s in the works, I’ve outlined it, so it could happen,” DeMonaco he.

According to DeMonaco, Jason Blum–head of Blumhouse Productions–really wants him to direct the next Purge film.

“It’s such a crazy idea that I was actually like, oh, maybe I’ll do that one. I’ll definitely write it, I’ll say that–so I’ll be involved in some way. I do worry, in different hands, you just don’t want to see it go the wrong way, because it easily could, a concept like this.”

The Forever Purge releases to theaters Friday, July 2. Make sure to check out the first trailer for the action-horror flick, and then get caught up with everything we know about it.
