Red Sox Are Hosting A Movie Night And Showing The Real Green Monster: Shrek

Fenway Park and Alamo Drafthouse have announced an unexpected promotion that will see beloved 2001 animated movie Shrek shown on the big screen at the home of the Boston Red Sox. But why Shrek? Baseball fans are well aware that the park’s iconic left field wall is known as the Green Monster, and, well, Shrek is also something of a green monster. Maybe don’t think about it too much.

This is part of Fenway Park’s annual Movie Night at Fenway Park series. Shrek features the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. The event takes place on August 22.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Red Sox season ticket holders get in for free. To make sure people can actually see the movie on Fenway’s 40×100-foot videoboard, tickets are only available in the lower bowl and down the first base line.

Gates open at 6:45 PM and the movie screening begins at 7:30 PM. In addition to getting to watch Shrek in all its glory, fans can take pictures with the Red Sox World Series trophies and concessions will be sold.

As for the Shrek series, movie boss Chris Meledandri said recently that it is his hope that Mike Meyers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) return for Shrek 5 to reprise their characters.

“We anticipate the cast coming back,” Meledandri said, though he cautioned that it’s still early days and no deals have been signed as of yet. “Talks are starting now, and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”

The first Shrek debuted in 2001, with sequels Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek The Third (2007), and Shrek: Forever After (2010) each following three years apart. Holiday specials Shrek the Halls and Scared Shrekless were also released, in 2007 and 2010 respectively. Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, released in 2022, and was a critical and commercial success as an extension of the Shrek universe.

Shrek 5 was at one point eyeing a 2019 release, but obviously that did not happen.
