Redfall Won't Get Promised DLC, All Updates Are Done

Microsoft is shutting down a number of Bethesda studios, including Arkane Austin, and related to that, the company has announced that “development will not continue on Redfall.”

Redfall was released in May 2023 behind a cold critical reception. Bethesda sold a Hero Pass that would give players two DLC characters, but they were never released and they never will be. Anyone who bought the Bite Back Edition ($100 USD) that included the Hero Pass “will be eligible to receive the value of the upgrade,” Arkane said. People who played Redfall via Game Pass were able to buy an upgrade that included the Bite Back Edition content for $33.50.

The studio also clarified that Redfall’s servers will remain online, but the game will receive no further updates. “To everyone that supported the work from our Austin studio over the years, thank you. Thank you for spending time in our worlds and making them your own,” the team said.

Arkane Lyon is staying open and will continue developing its new Blade game based on the Marvel character.

Following the difficult launch of Redfall in May 2023, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer commented on the game’s shortcomings. “There’s nothing more difficult for me than disappointing the Xbox community,” Spencer said. “I’m upset with myself.”

Spencer went on to say that Arkane Austin “didn’t hit their own internal goals” for Redfall and that Microsoft didn’t do enough to work with the studio on the game following the acquisition of Bethesda.

“We were too late to help. I take that as a learning. As painful as it is,” he said.

After Redfall’s rocky launch, Spencer said the company was committed to releasing additional updates to the game, including the highly anticipated 60fps update. This update arrived in October alongside a huge host of fixes and other changes.

In addition to Arkane Austin, Microsoft is closing Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks, as well as Alpha Dogs and Roundhouse Games, the latter of which will merge with ZeniMax Online Studios.
