It’s not especially clear what’s happening in the reveal trailer for Replaced, but even in the first few minutes, it looks pretty bleak. With a cyberpunk look, a pixel art visual style, and a mixture of dystopic moments and intense close-quarters fighting, we’re mostly getting a vibe off Replaced–but it’s an intense and interesting one.
Check out the trailer below, which debuted during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase at E3 2021. The game’s particular mixture of pixel art, side-scrolling gameplay, and high-quality 3D and lighting effects make for a pretty interesting look, but it’s the gameplay that seems interesting.

Developer Sad Cat Studios’ website gives even more details:
“REPLACED is a cinematic retro-futuristic action-thriller set in a dystopian alternative version of the 80s’ USA. You are R.E.A.C.H.–an AI trapped in a mortal human body against its will. Explore the world, push your body’s limits in intense combat and learn what it’s like to be a living being.”
Xbox also tweeted an additional look at the game with some context. It’s described as a platformer, but we get to see a quick mixture of melee and sword combat. So you seem to have the tools to deal with them in high-speed, John Wick-like close-quarters fights.
Replaced is headed to PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, and will be available on day one with Xbox Game Pass.
