The rumored Resident Evil 4 remake might be further away than initially suspected, with a report stating that Capcom is changing direction on the project and shaking up its development studio.
The report by VGC indicates that a remake of Resident Evil 4 has been in development since 2018, following the formats established by remakes for both Resident Evil 2 and 3. The studio leading the project was M-Two, a studio founded by PlatinumGames’ Tetsuya Minami. The studio most recently contributed to the development of Resident Evil 3 Remake.

Capcom has reportedly shifted course after a key project review in late 2020, where the direction M-Two was taking with the remake was questioned. It seems the studio wants to follow the template of Resident Evil 4 more closely this time, considering the backlash Resident Evil 3 Remake incurred for cutting content from the original. Capcom, and specifically its Division 1 studio, want to keep the game’s overall direction, but experiment with new features and mechanics, like how Resident Evil 2 reworked the inclusion of Mr. X to great effect.
As a result, Capcom Division 1 will now be leading the project, with M-Two’s involvement reportedly “reduced significantly”. This also means the game will likely not be ready for some time, with the report mentioning that its latest window is 2023, a year after it was rumored to launch. This would put several years between remake installments, despite there only being a year gap between the Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 remakes. Of course, that void will be filled by Resident Evil Village.
