Resident Evil 4's Remake Now Lets You Pay Real Money To Upgrade Weapons

By all accounts, Resident Evil 4 is not only set to be one of the best games of 2023, but also one of the best remakes of all time. The recent update that added The Mercenaries mode to RE4 also added another unexpected feature: microtransactions.

This optional paid DLC comes in the form of Upgrade Tickets, which allow the player to upgrade any weapon of their choosing for free, including the all-important exclusive upgrade. Each ticket costs $3, with optional multi-packs allowing players to buy three or five at a discount.

Now Playing: Game + Tell | Resident Evil 4

It should go without saying that the original Resident Evil 4 did not feature microtransactions when it was released in 2005, as the feature had not yet become a part of console gaming and the GameCube wasn’t an online console. Capcom did not indicate that this remake would add microtransactions to the game, but since they’re an optional single-player feature, at least you don’t have to mess about with them if you don’t want to.

The Mercenaries is an arcade score-attack mode built on the basic mechanics of RE4 that challenges you to rack up kills and combos in order to achieve the highest score possible. It also lets you play as a number of characters from the game, including Leon, Luis, Krauser, and Hunk.
