Riven Returns In 2024 With Updated Visuals, New Puzzles, And VR Support

In 1993, Cyan Worlds released Myst, one of the most influential puzzle games ever made, and followed it up with Riven a few years later. Following Myst’s remake treatment in 2020/2021, the team has announced that Riven will make its way back to consoles, PC, and VR platforms later this year.

The Riven remake is “built from the ground up” in Unreal Engine 5 by the game’s original development team. Along with graphical updates and reworked gameplay, Riven will include extra puzzles, an expanded 3D world that can be fully explored, and updated storylines that expand on the narrative of the original release.

This Riven revision was originally called Riven: New Discoveries From the Lost D’ni Empire when it was first announced in November 2022. The name has been changed to simply “Riven,” but the team has confirmed that this is in fact the same project and not a new endeavor.

Riven first launched in 1997, and continued the story of Atrus, a man searching for his wife through books that link to different worlds. Riven took players to the crumbling D’Ni Empire, where they explored and solved environmental puzzles in a vast point-and-click adventure in an effort to help Atrus in his quest.

Riven is scheduled to launch later this year on “flatscreen and VR” platforms. No specific consoles were announced in the official release.
