Actor Robert Downey Jr. spent 10-plus years playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His next role is that of Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s World War II drama Oppenheimer. Downey Jr. said in a new interview that he “100 percent” had concerns that his time making Marvel movies would have an effect on his acting skills.
“Yes. 100%,” Downey Jr. told The New York Times. “And I knew there was a point where Chris Nolan was endorsing, ‘Let’s work those other muscles, but let’s do it while rendering you devoid of your usual go-to things.'”
Downey Jr. first appeared as Iron Man in the very first MCU movie, 2008’s Iron Man. He reprised the role in the Iron Man sequels and other MCU films, culminating with his character’s death in Avengers: Endgame.
Downey Jr.’s comments come after another MCU actor, Anthony Hopkins, said his performance as Odin the Thor movies amounted to “pointless acting.” After that, Game of Thrones, Star Wars, and Marvel actress Emilia Clarke reacted to people who believe acting in front of a green screen isn’t “real” acting.
