The latest issue of Batman: Urban Legends includes a pretty major development for the DC Comics universe. In it, Tim Drake–one of the young wards Bruce Wayne has enlisted as Robin over the years–came out as bisexual. This comes less than two months after Disney+’s Loki series confirmed the titular character was both genderfluid and bisexual.
Batman: Urban Legends is an anthology series, with each issue containing multiple stories. In issue 4, the Tim Drake: Sum of Our Parts story by writer Meghan Fitzmartin, artist Belén Ortega, colorist Alejandro Sánchez, and letterer Pat Brosseau began. In it, Tim reunited with a friend named Bernard. As they share a meal, a villain attacks the diner they’re in and kidnaps Bernard.
Eventually, Tim is able to suit up as Robin to save Bernard in part 3 of Sum of Our Parts (in issue 6 of Urban Legends), at which point Bernard tells the masked hero he wishes he could have finished his date with Tim–not realizing who’s saving him.
At the conclusion of part 3, Tim visits his friend, explaining, “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about that night and I–I don’t know what it meant to me. Not yet. But I’d like to figure it out.” Bernard responds, asking if he’d want to go on a date. “Yeah… Yeah, I think I want that,” Tim says with a smile. That ends this part of the story, with a note that Sum of Our Parts will pick back up in issue 10 of Urban Legends.
With this new piece of Tim Drake’s character out in the world and officially canonical, artist Belén Ortega shared some words about the story on Twitter. “[Batman: Urban Legends] #6 is already out and with it our last chapter of ‘Tim Drake: Sum of Our Parts,'” she wrote. “It’s overwhelming all the comments and love I’m receiving from you guys, thanks for your support on my very first series with [DC Comics].” She also shared some of her sketches from the issue, which you can take a look at below.
