After nearly nine years in operation, Showtime’s standalone streaming service will be discontinued on April 30, as confirmed by notices sent to subscribers and reported by Variety. The decision follows Paramount Global’s integration of Showtime’s programming into its Paramount+ platform and aligns with the official timeline posted on Showtime’s FAQ regarding the service being phased out.
The integration began approximately a year ago with the introduction of the Paramount+ With Showtime ad-free streaming package in June 2023, coinciding with a subscription fee increase from $10 to $12 per month. Paramount Global originally planned to phase out the standalone Showtime streaming app by the end of 2023.
“Now that subscribers can access their favorite Showtime programs on Paramount+ by subscribing to the Paramount+ with Showtime plan, the Showtime streaming service will shut down on April 30, 2024,” a notice on the Showtime customer help site reads. “Current Showtime streaming subscribers will continue to have access to the Showtime streaming service until it is shut down on April 30, 2024.”
Warner Bros. Discovery, among other media conglomerates, adopted a similar strategy by discontinuing standalone HBO apps after the HBO Max launch, rebranding it as Max in 2023. In January 2024, Paramount Global rebranded the linear Showtime cable network as Paramount+ With Showtime, integrating select Paramount+ original series into the programming schedule and allowing linear TV subscribers to access online content through authenticated streaming apps provided by pay-TV partners.
According to Showtime, eligible standalone streaming subscribers may have their accounts automatically transferred to a Paramount+ subscription with the Paramount+ with Showtime plan. Others should directly subscribe to Paramount+ with Showtime to avoid overlapping subscriptions. Subscribers accessing Showtime through Amazon Prime Channels, Apple TV channels, The Roku Channel, and YouTube TV should consult their respective providers for guidance on the transition process.
