Shrek 5 Confirmed With Original Cast And 2026 Release Date

Late last month, Eddie Murphy let it slip that Shrek 5 is finally happening after a 14-year hiatus since the last sequel. Now, DreamWorks Animation has confirmed that Murphy and the other two original cast members, Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz, are all on board for Shrek 5. The studio also announced the July 9, 2026 release date in the best way possible: By using Smash Mouth’s All-Star, the song forever linked to the original Shrek.

That release date will fall just over 25 years since the premiere of Shrek in 2001. Myers voiced the titular ogre, who reluctantly went on a quest to save Princess Fiona (Diaz) alongside his self-declared best friend, Donkey (Murphy). The first film was such a huge hit that it spawned three sequels, before supposedly wrapping up the story in 2010’s Shrek Forever After.

Since Shrek and his family have been away, the spin-off film series, Puss in Boots, has been keeping the franchise alive. So far, there’s no word on whether Antonio Banderas’ Puss will be joining his old friends in the sequel. But we do know that Donkey is finally going to get his own movie. Murphy previously revealed that his character’s solo flick will be the next movie in the franchise after Shrek 5.

DreamWorks Animation hasn’t announced the rest of the voice cast for Shrek 5, or revealed the director. But now that the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, more details should be forthcoming soon.
